    Graduation Recital: Gina Park

4:00 PMLilian Piercey Concert Hall, the Conservatory

In the Conservatory’s early years, a graduation recital by music graduates was an important right-of-passage and a recurring feature of the spring schedule. This venerable tradition has been revived by senior piano student Gina Park. Gina’s Graduation Recital will be on Saturday, April 22, 2017, at 4:00 PM at the Lilian Piercey Concert Hall. Her programme will include music by Beethoven, Mozart, and Mendelssohn. The Association is organizing a reception following the recital. Members of the MCPA Association are cordially invited to attend this celebratory concert.

Gina is a piano student of Carol von Syberg and a theory student of Dr. Lorna Wanzel, both of whom are members of the MCPA Association of which Carol is also the Corresponding Secretary for the organizations Board of Directors. Gina performed at the Association’s 2016 AGM, and she has been a frequent recipient of MCPA Association Scholarships. She was also awarded the MCPA Association Medal for the highest marks in the Conservatory’s Grades 8, 9, and 10 piano exams and also earned High Honours from the Royal Conservatory of Music in the same grades. With students of her own, Gina has already begun a career as a piano teacher.

This year Gina is studying chamber music with Simon Docking and Gillian Smith. During her recital, Gina is delighted to be a part of a chamber group performing Mendelssohn’s melodious Piano Trio No.1 in D Minor. Three of Gina’s students will also be featured in a six-hand, one piano performance!

    *****

Gina Park was born in Bucheon, South Korea, and it was there that she began piano lessons at age six. In 2010 her family moved to Canada, settling in Halifax, where she enrolled at the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts. At MCPA she has continued her piano studies with Carol von Syberg with parallel explorations of music theory with Dr. Lorna Wanzel. Having completed Grade X in piano, Gina is currently studying Advanced Piano Pedagogy, the final component of the ARCT in Piano Pedagogy.

Gina has also been active in the community. Last summer she volunteered at QEII Veterans’ Hospital where she made many veteran friends. Gina has also volunteered at the Spring Garden Road/Central Library, Feed Nova Scotia, CNIB, and as a math tutor at Gorsebrook Junior High. And if this weren’t enough, along with her studies as a Grade XII student at Citadel High School, Gina has been teaching piano to a growing group of both children and adults for the past two years!
Gina is dedicated to promoting a love for music in her community by attending Symphony Nova Scotia concerts, encouraging younger musicians at her church and, most directly, teaching her students.

When Gina is not teaching or practicing, she enjoys exploring contemporary piano pieces (with a particular fondness for composers such as Yann Tiersen, Joe Hisaishi, and Ludovico Einaudi), solving logic puzzles, learning German, and practising yoga.
