As an accredited music therapist with the Canadian Association of Music Therapists, Antonia engages clients in musical interventions that address therapeutic goals. Music engages the body, brain and emotions in neurological and motivational ways that are unique to organized sound. Through her work at the Ottawa Children’s Treatment Centre and her private clinic for autism in Ottawa, she experienced the effects of music on disorders such as autism, developmental delay and Down’s Syndrome to facilitate the advancement of cognitive, communication, physical and social goals. At the Perley Rideau Veteran’s Health Centre in Ottawa and currently at Camp Hill Veteran’s Memorial Hospital in Halifax, Antonia works with people with dementia and sees how music therapy stimulates memory and movement and facilitates social engagement. To better understand the neurological implications of musical engagement, she became certified as a Neurologic Music Therapist through the Robert F. Unkefer Academy for Neurologic Music Therapy in 2013 and is currently completing a masters in Neurologic
Music Therapy at Colorado State. Her musical background as a jazz vocalist and creative improvisor greatly influences her clinical choices, as does twenty-five years as a music educator. She has taught contemporary singing at Dalhousie University, MCPA and the NSCC in Halifax, including 4 years at Carleton University in Ottawa and was a music educator for the Halifax Regional School Board. Antonia has a BFA in Jazz Studies from Concordia University, a BEd in Music from Dalhousie, a certification in music therapy from Acadia and is completing a masters in music therapy from Colorado State.
