An active performer in his home town of Halifax and beyond, Matt Richard studied trumpet from a young age through school and into university. Matt successfully completed his master’s degree at the University of Victoria under Lou Ranger, a former member of the American Brass Quintet. He has taken lessons and masterclasses with nationally and internationally renowned performers such as Karen Donnelly, Eric Aubier, and Tom Rolfs, among others. Matt has appeared in concert with Nova Sinfonia, Scotia Brass, Opera Nova Scotia, the ScotiaFest Gala Orchestra, the Pacific Philharmonic, the Victoria Chamber Orchestra, the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra, the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra, the UVic Symphony Orchestra, as a soloist with the Chebucto Symphony Orchestra and Dalhousie Symphony Orchestra, and on the fanfare unit of the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo. Matt has several years of experience teaching students from the beginning stages through advanced levels, including coaching brass chamber music at the University of Victoria, and his current position as high brass faculty at the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts. He prides himself in helping students achieve the best sound they can, and in being able to play confidently with others and on their own. He focuses on tone production, musicality, expanding skillsets, sightreading, playing in an ensemble, and improvisation.
