Max Fleischman took his formative training in piano with Beatrice Allen (a student of James Friskin and Nadia Reisenberg). He then pursued further piano studies with Nelita True, Gabriel Chodos and Carmen Vilá, and historical keyboard studies with David Breitman, Malcolm Bilson and Peter Sykes, earning degrees and honours from Harvard University, the Eastman School of Music, and the Oberlin Conservatory.  

Max has appeared in concert as a recitalist, concerto soloist, chamber musician and continuo player across Canada and the U.S., performing music from the past six centuries on five instruments (piano, fortepiano, harpsichord, clavichord and organ).  In addition to his interpretations of historic repertoires, his new music performances have won praise from such composers as Gordon Fitzell, Michael Matthews, Jason Eckardt and John Adams.  He has participated in numerous festivals, including the Agassiz and Kneisel Hall chamber music festivals, the Castleman Quartet Program, the Oberlin Baroque Performance Institute, the Cluster New Music Festival, and the Aspen Music Festival.

 

As a piano teacher, Max focuses on the art of practicing, and on learning how to learn.  He encourages his students to improvise and compose (in order to better understand and enjoy music), and puts special emphasis on concentration, memory and body awareness (to help students avoid physical and mental stresses when playing).  Max has taught music theory and history at the university level, and has contributed programme and liner notes for leading Canadian ensembles, including the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra and the Clearwater Quartet.
