Bassist Ronald J. Hynes began studying jazz at St. Francis Xavier University in 2006. While attending St.FX he performed regularly with faculty members and also had the privilege to perform at master classes with guest artists Jimmy Cobb (Miles Davis “Kind of Blue”) and New York guitarist, Jonathan Kreisberg. In his fourth year of the jazz program awarded him the MusiCounts Fred Sherratt Award for outstanding achievement in music.
In 2009 Ronald also attended the International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music under Dave Douglas at the Banff Centre for the Arts. It was at this workshop he joined the Canadian/US jazz collective, Tunnel Six, who have
been awarded multiple Canada Council touring grants to perform across Canada and the west coast of the United States.
After parting with Tunnel Six in 2011, Ronald continued his career as a freelance bassist in eastern Canada and was named musician of the year by Music Nova Scotia in 2017. He has performed and recorded with many well known artists such as Heather Rankin & Jimmy Rankin (The Rankin Family), Lennie Gallant, Dave Gunning, Charlie A’Court, Ben Caplan, John Campbelljohn, Dave Sampson, Ryan Cook, Hey Rosetta! and many more. He can be seen performing regularly with a variety of jazz/experimental musical groups in Halifax, most notably every Wednesday for Jazz night at “The Local”, with Damien Moynihan and Silvio Pupo.
