Jennifer Publicover (MMus, MES, BMus) is a performer on the modern orchestral flute, the traditional wooden Irish flute, and the simple system Baroque flute, and has decades of teaching experience. She is the founder and director of the Halifax Institute of Traditional and Early Music, a community school which provides opportunities for playing Baroque chamber music as well as for traditional music from many different cultures. As a recording and touring artist she plays with the neo-traditional roots trio Papilio, the Scandinavian music group Harpaflöjt, and the Sweden-based Halifax Rättvik Project.

Jennifer earned her Master’s degree in flute performance from the University of Toronto and her Bachelor of Music from Mount Allison. She has freelanced with the Charlottetown Festival Orchestra, Symphony Nova Scotia, the Stadacona Band, St. George’s Consort, Réjouissance, and many other groups.

Her flute teaching methods are geared around the artistic goals of each student, whether that be Royal Conservatory exams, music festivals, university entrance auditions, orchestral auditions, celtic and other traditional music forms, learning Baroque flute, playing for sheer enjoyment, or some blend of any of these goals – and, for everyone, experiencing the joy of making music and of expressing ourselves through it. In terms of student instruments, modern, Irish, and Baroque flutes are welcome across genres.

She also has a Master of Environmental Studies and has published scholarly articles on the use of music as a tool for environmental education and advocacy. As a faculty member at Saint Mary’s University, she teaches the history of Irish traditional music in the Irish Studies department.
