Shauna DeGruchy is a freelance trombonist and music educator based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She performs regularly with ensembles such as Nova Sinfonia, Glass Winds, and Siren Brass, and is a founding member and co-artistic director of contemporary chamber group Alkali Collective. As an avid supporter of contemporary music, she has commissioned and premiered several new solo and chamber music compositions for her instrument.
Shauna has performed in festivals and conferences across Canada, including the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, Sonic Boom, the Montreal International Jazz Festival, Shattering the Silence, Open Waters, and the Halifax Jazz Festival, as well as events such as the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo. She has also toured internationally with several ensembles, including a recent performance in Tokyo, Japan as a soloist with the Vancouver Pops Symphony Orchestra.
Shauna holds an undergraduate degree from Acadia University and a master’s degree from Université de Montréal. A dedicated teacher, she offers private lessons for trombone, euphonium, and tuba to a wide range of ages and levels. Shauna is a trombone coach for the Nova Scotia Youth Wind Ensemble, and teaches trombone and low brass on faculty at the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts.
